We wish good health and safety for our residents and guests. However, in the event of an emergency, world class fire and emergency medical services are available.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services are provided through interlocal agreements between departments. Automatic response agreements allow emergency responses to cross jurisdictional lines without delay for the benefit of the public. A centralized dispatch center answers all 9-1-1 calls.
Venice Fire Department responds to fire calls within the incorporated City of Venice. Sarasota County Emergency Services responds to fire calls throughout the remainder of the County with the exception of jurisdictions belonging to Englewood Fire Department and Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department.
Emergency Services are provided by Sarasota County Emergency Services with Advanced Life Support units supported by each of the Fire Departments.
Venice Fire Department
DESCRIPTION
The Venice Fire Department operates from three fire stations: Station 1 at 112 S. Harbor Drive, Station 2 and the administrative offices at 200 N. Grove Street, and Station 3 at 5300 E. Laurel Road.
The Department boasts an ISO (Insurance Services Offices) rating of 3 which places it in the top 3 percent of all Fire Departments in Florida and keeps insurance rates low for its citizens and businesses.
The Department's firefighters are dually trained as Emergency Medical Technicians and respond as First Responders with Sarasota County Emergency Medical Services.
Venice Fire Department also operates a marine rescue and fire suppression program.
Sarasota County Fire Department operates 17 Fire-Rescue stations and 6 EMS only stations that protect 325,000 residents over 412 square miles. The Department handles over 6500 fire incidents annually and over 40,000 non-fire incidents. The department employs over 185 Firefighter/Paramedics and over 215 Firefighter/EMT's. Sarasota County Fire Department provides Emergency Medical Services to the cities of Venice and Sarasota, the unincorporated areas of Sarasota County as well as Nokomis and Englewood.
The Department operates 21 Advanced Life Support (ALS) Transport Ambulances, 4 ALS fire engines, and two critical care interfacility transport ambulances. The Department's 400 plus Firefighter/Emt's and Firefighter/Paramedics respond to more than 38,000 medical calls annually. Department personnel provide emergency medical treatment under the Medical Direction of Dr. Steven Newman, Medical Director. Paramedics provide livesaving treatments such as administering medications and IV's, defibrillation, external pacing, chest decompression, cricothyrotomy, all under the direction of the Medical Director.
Patients are transported to one of five resource hospitals located within Sarasota County or one of five resource hospitals located outside of Sarasota County. Critical trauma patients are transported via Bayflite Aeromedical Helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, a Certified Trauma Center in St. Petersburg Florida.
Whether providing advanced procedures or simply holding a patients hand to reassure, Sarasota County Fire Department's EMS personnel are world class.
Bayflite Aeromedical Services provides helicopter transport for critical trauma patients from the emergency scene to Bayfront Medical Center in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Emergency Medical Services and Fire Department personnel provide scene stabilization and establish safe landing zones. Bayflite maintains a flight crew of one pilot, one flight nurse, and one flight paramedic. Bayflite's crew rushes patients to Bayfront Medical Center, a level two trauma center, where a trauma surgeon and surgical team are waiting for the patient.
Englewood Fire Department
DESCRIPTION
The Englewood Fire Department protects 83 square miles of Sarasota and Charlotte Counties from six fire stations using 57 Firefighter/EMT's. The Englewood Area Fire Control District has a year round population of over 50,000 expanding to over 80,000 "in-season". They average 8 calls per day and protect the citizens they serve 24 hours/day, 7 days per week.
The Englewood Area Fire Control District is a self governing "special fire district" established by the Florida Legislature in 1983. It is an independent governmental unit funded by a non-advalorem assessment.
Firefighters are cross trained as emergency medical technicians and provide medical first response for Sarasota and Charlotte counties.

Nokomis Fire Department is a public fire department staffed by volunteers that operate from a single station. They were established in 1949 and have approximately 33 members. Covering an area of 35 square miles, their dedicated personnel protect a population of 13,000. The Nokomis Fire Department runs approximately 11,000 calls per year and is supported solely by donations received from the area they serve. They provide fire suppression, vehicle extrication, and first response for Sarasota County EMS.
Nokomis Fire Department is recognized throughout the community for the quality of their training programs.
